Three days in Eindhoven - a city that's trying hard to market itself in design.
It also has the Forbidden City - the old Philips works to the NW of the centre which is now developed as a creative quarter. Plenty of Birmingham reference points - particularly the underpasses. The town hall feels  1970's   - but in a good way - plenty of space and quirky internal features. I liked the idea of social design - communities and designers working with the Council on projects developed in the neighbourhood - something here for Birmingham surely?
The last meeting of the ECCE crew before Brussels - so we talked about new ideas - cross overs from creative firms to other sectors, linking our co-working spaces and more on enterprise and our graduates.
Took train and stopped at Amsterdam South for a couple of hours to meet Robert Marijnissen then on to Schiphol and home.

Dropped by to the opening night of the Solakov at IKON. He has the two floors as well as the loos (go along and you'll see what I mean).
The style is inquisitive and self exploring, mischievous too with a wide range of pieces mainly from the last 20 years.
The self deprecation could appear a little "knowing" but not here. Solakov comments on relationships, systems and power issues in ways which made me think. I really liked the diary idea and the video of him reading them back to his son and daughter - 1991 meets 2011.

Been away now for a couple of weeks and thinking about putting something down as a discussion piece. On return home will do a report for Creative Metropoles on "Creative Birmingham" as an end of project summation.
I think I'll use our 3 key messages from Barcelona - Not one size fits all, need to focus on SME growth models and links with CCIs and other sectors.
Maybe focus on Charles Landry to then talk about Spaces, Networks , Districts and a bit of Franco Bianchini & Richard Florida on Culture and Heterogeneity.
On the  section on networks I'll talk about Michael Porter - world class networks - vertically integrated; then Open Innovation - SMEs with diversification strategies in 2-3 sectors; then something on networks as alliances as in "We Are Eastside".
I've some good Birmingham examples as cases - Rare games, Tindal Street Press & Substrakt.
 
Will then describe eco-systems in the city and focus on hubs - Custard Factory, Jewellery Quarter and Science Park/Science City.
 
I need to talk about power relationships in these networks specifically and for the city as a whole - not in a pejorative sense - but to better understand how it really is and as a counter to models of collaboration where all is smooth and focused.
 
Can then conclude with some discussion on the Financial Crisis and Creative Industries from a Birmingham perspective and to look at growth models.
Need to research Inteli as they have some interesting stuff and to look at the ACRE project again as some good lessons here too.
